Gears of War: E-Day Campaign Overview — Story, Structure & Co-op

FAQ

How long is the Gears of War: E-Day campaign?
The Coalition has not announced a length. The story covers three days in Kalona — expect a structure comparable to previous Gears campaigns.
Does the E-Day campaign have co-op?
Yes — the full campaign supports up to 4-player online co-op and 2-player split-screen on console.
Is the E-Day campaign open world?
No — it is a linear, mission-based campaign like the original trilogy, though press previews describe multi-path combat zones and optional side objectives with hidden collectibles.

E-Day’s campaign is the origin story the series has circled for twenty years: the day the Locust Horde emerged and ended the world as Sera knew it. Everything below is drawn from official trailers, Xbox Wire features, and press hands-on sessions — we’ll keep it updated as launch approaches.

When and where does the E-Day campaign take place?

The campaign is set in Kalona, a city built specifically for this game, across three nights of survival starting on Emergence Day — fourteen years before the original Gears of War. The Locust erupt from underground without warning, killing roughly a quarter of humanity overnight, and the city falls apart street by street as the COG scramble to respond.

Who do you play as?

You play as Marcus Fenix — younger, more disciplined, and less erratic than the veteran of the original trilogy — fighting beside Dom Santiago. They are joined by two newcomers: Mags Carter, a formerly discharged Gear pulled back into the war, and Lucas Reyes, a young cadet seeing his first real combat. Together they are christened Bravo Squad in the opening hours. Meet them all in the Bravo Squad character guide.

What is the campaign structure?

Confirmed missions and beats from official footage and press previews:

Section What happens Status
Opening / Act 1 Emergence night — civilians caught in the first assault, the squad forms Confirmed — see Act 1
Act 2 City Hall command post, the Legacy Bridge assault, Octus Way station Hands-on previewed — see Act 2
Later acts The fall of Kalona across three days Officially teased, details pending

The structure is classic Gears: linear missions broken into chapters, but with multi-path combat arenas, optional secondary objectives, and hidden collectibles rather than a straight corridor — press previews describe it as a smarter middle ground between Gears 5’s semi-open zones and the original trilogy’s lanes.

Does the campaign have co-op?

Yes — the entire campaign supports up to 4-player online co-op, and 2-player split-screen is available on console only. Enemy scaling and squad AI mean it plays fine solo, but E-Day was clearly built around the four-person Bravo Squad fantasy.

Are there collectibles?

Yes — press previews show a collectibles counter on missions (five pickups in the first mission alone). A dedicated collectibles guide goes live at launch.

What about New Game+ or difficulty?

Neither has been detailed officially. Expect the standard Gears difficulty ladder (Casual through Insane-class) at minimum — we will update this page once The Coalition confirms the options.
