FAQ

Is Gears of War: E-Day good for newcomers?
Yes — it is a prequel and an origin story, so no prior Gears knowledge is needed. The campaign starts with the squad finding their first weapons as the invasion begins.
What is Active Reload in E-Day?
A timed button press during reload: hit the sweet spot for a faster, buffed reload; miss it and the gun jams. E-Day adds single-shell loading on the Gnasher and Breechshot so you can interrupt a reload to fire.
Does E-Day have co-op?
Yes — the full campaign supports up to 4-player online co-op, plus 2-player split-screen on console.

Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel built to be an on-ramp — the story literally begins with Bravo Squad picking up weapons for the first time. But under the familiar cover-shooter skeleton, The Coalition rebuilt the combat sandbox. Here is what actually matters in your first hours.

How does cover combat work in E-Day?

E-Day is a cover shooter: survival means snapping to walls, barricades and abandoned cars, then leaning out to fire between enemy volleys. Staying in the open gets you shredded — especially against Locust Drones, which now flank, throw smoke, and rush your position the moment you tunnel-vision. Move cover-to-cover with the roadie run, and let your squad draw fire while you reposition.

What is Active Reload?

Reloading in Gears is a minigame: tap reload again inside the highlighted zone for a Perfect Reload — faster and with a damage bonus — or miss and the gun jams, leaving you exposed. E-Day adds a twist on the Gnasher and Breechshot: they now load shell-by-shell, so you can cut a reload short to fire a partial magazine in an emergency. The Gnasher’s capacity dropped from 8 shells to 6 to balance the trick.

What is new in the gunplay?

Three sandbox changes from the official gameplay deep dive:

  • Simulated ballistics — every projectile now has travel time and drop, so at range you lead targets instead of pointing at them.
  • Weapon sway — guns have realistic handling weight; sustained fire is less laser-accurate than older Gears.
  • Weapon mods — found in the campaign, mods tune weapon behavior and feed into Horde Siege loadouts. See the weapon mods guide and the full weapon list.

Which weapons should beginners lean on?

Weapon Why it carries beginners
Prototype Lancer High rate of fire, deep magazine, and the chainsaw bayonet — the safest all-rounder
Gnasher One-shot deletes at close range; new per-shell reload forgives panic reloads
Snub pistol Your first pickup and a reliable finisher when the Lancer runs dry
Frag grenades Close Emergence Holes before they flood the street with Locust

Our Prototype Lancer breakdown covers the origin story of the series’ signature rifle, and Gnasher Active Reload digs into the new shell loading.

How does co-op change things?

The campaign supports up to 4-player online co-op (2-player split-screen on console). AI squadmates are genuinely useful solo — they revive you when you go down and pick off Locust on their own — but a human squad trivializes the drone flanks that punish solo players. If you prefer your co-op louder, Horde Siege is the 12-player PvE mode.

What mistakes should you avoid on Emergence Day?

  • Sprinting in the open. The roadie run is for cover-to-cover dashes, not exploration — Drones with Longshots punish it.
  • Ignoring E-holes. Close Emergence Holes with frag grenades fast, or the wave never ends.
  • Hoarding frags. Grenades exist to be thrown — into holes, into packs, into anything pale.
  • Forgetting the chainsaw. If a Drone closes distance, the Lancer’s bayonet ends the argument instantly.
